General Mechanical Requirements

Trim Size: 8 1/4 X 10 7/8
Printing Method: Heat-set web offset
Binding: Saddlewire stitch
Paper: Covers are printed on 80# text, No. 3 glossy stock. Inside pages are printed on 50# text, No. 3 dull stock. Proofs should be made on comparable stock.
Inks: SWOP web-offset standard CMYK inks are used. Furnished proofs should use these inks.
Supplied Film: Complete, original, screened film negatives preferred, right reading, emulsion side down. Film must be clear based, dimensionally stable and of identical gauge (.005" is recommended). Films should be supplied in one piece per color, and identified by color and advertiser (e.g. black, Company X). No etching or hand color corrections should be made on film. All opaquing should be done on the non-emulsion side. Film should be hard dot. No camera or etched film.
Proofs and Conversion Materials: Acceptable materials are right-reading film, MatchPrintTM proofs preferred. Screened prints are not acceptable. Approved color proof should accompany conversion materials. For best results, a MatchPrintTM proof should be supplied. The final appearance of an advertisement will be affected by the proof we are matching.

Four-Color Process Requirements

Screen: 133-line screen is recommended for all colors.
Registration: Film for all four-color ads should have four center registration marks, located 1/4" outside trim area. Registration marks should be "line" copy at least 1/2" long and should not exceed .003" in width or weight. Film should be one piece per color in exact register.
Ink Density: The sum percentages of tone values should not exceed 280% and no more than one solid color should be used. The maximum screened tone value for any one color should be 85%; a required value over 85% should be made solid.
Typography: Thin lines, fine serifs, and medium or small lettering should be restricted to one color. Reproduce all reverse lettering with a minimum of color, using key color for shape of letters and making lettering in subordinate color larger than key color to reduce registration problems. Smaller than 10 point type with fine serifs are not practical and should be avoided, as publisher will not accept responsibility for poor registration. In surprinting, use a screen of not more than 30% density for the background where type is surprinted.
Proofing: One complete proof with color bars is required. If alterations are made to color values in the four-color film, a new proof should be supplied for best quality reproduction. For minor corrections when time does not permit reproofing, note on all films, single-color proofs and four-color proofs what changes have been made. Film not in exact register may cause quality problems throughout an edition's press run.
Shipment of Materials: Prints of films should be separately slip-sheeted, securely packed, and thoroughly protected to prevent any possible damage. Contents of the package should be identified on the outside of the package.
